Belk announces store closure the same day as Cobb Mall closes for not paying bills.

​Town Center and Georgia Power have been collaborating for a number of months to settle Town Center's "highly delinquent" bills. Disconnecting service at the mall was a "last resort," they continued.

In order to "show our gratitude" to the neighborhood for housing the business for so many years, Belk announced on Tuesday that it will "offer customers 65% off regular-priced items and 75% off clearance items in-store through Monday, February 17."

Three of the mall's large anchor stores—Macy's, Belk, and JCPenney's—remain open, but the doors that connect them to the rest of the complex are closed. Because they pay a separate utility payment, such establishments are able to stay open.

According to Georgia Power officials, letters and on-site signage warning mall management and tenants of the impending shutdown were sent to them.

"We work with Georgia Power customers every day to address past due bills and make payment arrangements to avoid disconnection, which is always a last resort for our company. In this case, we’ve tried to work with Town Center Mall for many months and have provided numerous solutions to assist them in avoiding disconnection. Unfortunately, any customer that is highly delinquent in paying their bills ultimately has a negative impact for all of our customers, so while we will continue to work with the customer and are hopeful a payment will be made, we can no longer continue to extend the grace period. We provided advance notice regarding this disconnection to mall management as well as tenants by delivering letters in person and placing signage onsite. We also made key community leaders aware."
